WiFi QR Codes Explained

A WiFi QR code isn't a link at all, which surprises people who assume every QR code opens a webpage. It's your network's name and password encoded directly in a format both iPhone and Android cameras already know how to read — no app, no website, no internet connection required to scan it.

What's actually encoded

Modern phones recognize a specific text format for WiFi credentials — something like WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetworkName;P:MyPassword;; — and when the camera app detects that exact pattern inside a scanned QR code, it shows a native "Join Network" prompt instead of opening a browser. That's the entire trick: nothing is happening on a server, no scan is recorded, and no internet connection is needed for the scan itself to work. It's closer to how a WiFi QR code sticker on a router works than to how a link works.

Making one that actually connects
